Updated: 4 days ago

At Boheme Retreats, we believe that nature belongs to everyone. That’s why we were thrilled to read Travel Noire’s recent article on Black travel trends. The report highlights a growing movement of Black travelers seeking community and cultural experiences. This shift is monumental not just for representation, but for the broader outdoor industry, which has historically lacked diversity.

Why This Matters

For too long, the narrative around outdoor recreation has excluded Black and Brown communities. Many of us have faced systemic barriers and a lack of representation. Often, we simply don’t feel welcomed in these spaces. However, this is changing.

As we see ourselves in nature, we feel a sense of belonging. Representation is powerful; it fosters confidence, encourages participation, and, most importantly, reclaims our space in nature.

At Boheme Retreats, we have seen firsthand how impactful it is to create safe, welcoming outdoor spaces for the BIPOC community. Our vintage glamping retreats are designed to provide not just a getaway but also a place where people feel seen and valued.

Introducing Retrofolk Summer Camps

We are excited to launch Retrofolk Summer Camps this season, a new initiative under Boheme Retreats aimed at making nature even more accessible. Retrofolk Summer Camps will bring immersive outdoor experiences to Black and Brown travelers who may be new to camping, hiking, or spending extended time in nature.

These programs will provide:

  • Guided outdoor experiences led by BIPOC adventurers, making first-time campers feel comfortable and equipped.

  • Workshops on sustainable travel and outdoor skills to build confidence in the outdoors.

  • A welcoming community where participants can connect, share stories, and create lasting memories.

  • New York glamping experiences for those seeking a unique and comfortable way to connect with nature.

  • An adult summer camp atmosphere, bringing nostalgic camp vibes to grown-ups who want to embrace adventure and relaxation.

This is more than just a summer camp; it’s a movement toward redefining what it means to be an outdoor lover.

Changing the Outdoor Industry

The Travel Noire article underscores what we have known all along: Black and Brown travelers want to be in nature, and the industry must evolve to meet our needs. This evolution includes creating more inclusive outdoor spaces, increasing representation in marketing, and providing resources tailored to our experiences.

We must create spaces where Black and Brown individuals feel they can explore without hesitation. Creating visibility for our communities in outdoor activities is crucial. Whether it’s through storytelling, social media, or targeted marketing, we must ensure our voices are amplified and celebrated.

At Boheme Retreats, we are committed to being at the forefront of this change. With Retrofolk Summer Camps, we are taking tangible steps to ensure that the next generation of Black and Brown adventurers doesn’t have to wonder whether they belong in nature—they will know they do.

The Healing Power of Nature

Nature has an undeniable healing effect. Many find peace and solace when surrounded by greenery, mountains, or bodies of water. Black and Brown communities can deeply benefit from this connection to nature. The simple act of stepping outside can be rejuvenating. It allows us to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with ourselves and our ancestors.

Additionally, being in nature can help break down mental and emotional barriers. Exploring the outdoors often leads to personal growth and self-discovery. Whether you are camping for the first time or returning to the trails after years, each experience is a stepping stone towards a deeper appreciation for our environment.

Call to Action

We invite you to join us in this journey. Celebrate nature by participating in our Retrofolk Summer Camps. Connect with others who share your passion for the outdoors. Together, we can cultivate a supportive environment where everyone can flourish.

So here’s to more Black and Brown faces in the wild, more stories around the campfire, and more of us reclaiming the great outdoors. Let’s keep pushing the movement forward.
